We are deeply saddened to announce that Ömer Zeytinoğlu, who served as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye between 1968-2007 and in that capacity represented his country as the Republic of Türkiye’s Ambassador to Romania, has passed away on Wednesday, 16 April.

For many years, Ambassador (R) Zeytinoğlu supported the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) with his experience acquired throughout his diplomatic career, and made valuable contributions to AVİM’s publications. His work studied a wide range of topics that included the past and present political ramifications of the 1915 Events and the smear campaigns directed against Türkiye in this context, the slavery legacy of the US, the struggle made by the indigenous peoples of North America against destruction and discrimination that was inflicted upon them in the past, and the legal struggle of the US citizens of Japanese descent who were interned during the Second World War.

Our thoughts are with Ambassador (R) Zeytinoğlu’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. The staff of AVİM extends its heartfelt condolences.
