Following the restoration of its independence, the Republic of Azerbaijan applied to the United Nations General Assembly and the nations of the world on October 29, 1991, seeking membership in the United Nations.

At the 46th session of the UN General Assembly held on March 2, 1992, a resolution was adopted granting Azerbaijan membership in the Organization. The national flag of Azerbaijan, the organization’s 181st member, was raised in front of the UN headquarters in New York.

Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the UN began its operations on March 6, 1992. In November of the same year, the UN opened its own permanent mission in Azerbaijan.
