Only weeks after his acquittal on charges he defrauded the EU of billions of euros, former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš is looking to overcome a yawning deficit in the polls and win his country’s presidential election this weekend. 

His latest pitch? Vote for me, I’ll avoid a war with Russia. 

It’s a strategy that’s meant to position the billionaire as the antithesis of his pro-Western, pro-Ukraine rival, Petr Pavel, a retired army general who once served as chairman of NATO’s military committee.
