Bulgaria’s new interim government, led by Andrey Gyurov, assumed power on Wednesday, as snap general elections were scheduled for April 19 – the eighth in Bulgaria since 2021.

The elections follow the collapse of the controversial coalition led by the centre-right GERB, including the Bulgarian Socialist Party and There’s Such a People, and backed by the tycoon Delyan Peevski’s New Beginning.

The cabinet resigned in December under pressure from the biggest protests in decades, triggered by an unpopular draft annual budget.
