On November 5, the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced plans to expand the operational scope of the Cheonghae naval unit, which is currently engaged in anti-piracy operations and protecting commercial vessels in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia.

According to Yonhap news agency, the deployed force will include a destroyer, P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team, unmanned surface vehicles, unmanned submersibles, and remotely operated vehicles for underwater surveys.

The move comes amid the outbreak of the US- Iran conflict on February 28, which has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This is a strategic shipping lane for global energy supplies, typically carrying about one-fifth of the world's oil.
