Laying of the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan has begun, marking a major step toward strengthening digital connectivity between Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

The approximately 380-kilometer cable will connect Aktau in Kazakhstan with Sumgayit in Azerbaijan and will become the first submarine fiber-optic cable in the Caspian Sea. It will have a data transmission capacity of up to 400 terabits per second.

The Trans-Caspian Fiber-Optic Communication Line (FOCL) project forms part of the broader Digital Silk Way initiative, launched by NEQSOL Holding, to establish a sustainable digital telecommunications corridor linking Europe and Asia.
