On 9 December 2016, AVİM organized a conference titled “The Current State of the Academic Debate over the Events of 1915 in an Increasingly Islamophobic West” with Assist. Prof. Christopher Gunn as the speaker.

Assist. Prof. Gunn is currently a faculty member at the History Department of Coastal Carolina University (USA) and continues his research on areas that include the Ottoman Empire and especially its border regions such as the Balkans and Caucasia, the successor states of the Ottoman Empire, and transnational political violence and reconciliation. During the conference, Gunn evaluated the work carried out by Western academia on the 1915 events within the general cultural context of the West, and used the framework and tone of the academic discussions as the focus point. During his presentation, Gunn drew attention to the fact that, just like the 1920’s, in recent times the discussions about the 1915 events in the United States have begun to carried out within the conception of “Muslim Turks – Christian Armenians”.
